So due to a family emergency, I, as an American citizen, had to move temporarily back to the States. I do not expect to stay here beyond October of this year (i.e. 3 1/2 months at most) and mostly I'm wondering if I can hold part-time employment here in the States and still retain my Canadian permanent residency. Any links to official information on this matter would be fantastic!

To retain your PR status, you must live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 rolling years. Leaving for 3.5 months won't be an issue.

Also, I understand the living requirements, but is that for 2 consecutive years, or 2 years total throughout the entire 5 years?

And that applies even if I'm employed in the States for those 3 months?

Yes - same rule applies. It doesn't matter why you are outside of Canada.

The 2 years do not have to be consecutive.
