hello all, hope u guys have a wonderful day :D

i have a questiong not relating to visa what so ever, but hope maybe some of u guys can help me out.
i am a cdn citizen and is in the process of sponsoring my wife from vietnam. i just sent the application in a bout 2 weeks ago to missisagua :D.
we got married about 3 months ago in vietnam in december of 2009.
so now its time to do my tax. the question is, can i claim my wife even tho shes not in canada? or should i just put my status as single on that tax form.
thanks.

Yes, you have to claim your spouse. I went through this too.

I used the Quick Tax program.

There is a place where you select that they are a non resident. This explains the zero income on thier part.

There is also a specific form on the CRA website that you have to complete and submit to them to change your status from single to married. You can do this now before you submit your tax return.

I never completed a form. I changed my name at a services canada office and specifically asked is there anything else I have to do... the answer was firmly no. I don't think it's a requirement as when you do your income tax they ask for the details of your marriage.

thanks guys :D have a great day

Guess it depends who you speak to. When I called Canada Revenue, they said that it was required. The form is here: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/rc65/
