My Taiwanese wife arrived here July 30 and she is allowed to stay until Jan 2013. She is considering going across the border to the US then returning to have her visitor's visa renewed. Taiwanese nationals do not need a visa to enter Canada but when they do enter they are allowed to stay for only six months. If she goes across the border then comes back, will she be granted another six months stay? She has a US visa. She recently took a short trip to San Francisco, but when she came back the border official just gave her the same amount of time she originally had before she left (until Jan 2013). If she goes to Detroit in Jan 2013 and immediately returns, will they give her another six months? Is it totally up to the personal discretion of the border official or is there any standard procedure? While I was in Taiwan on a two month visitor's visa, I just had to pop over to Hong Kong and come back to have my visa renewed. Would that work here?
