Dear All,
A friend landed exactly 4weeks ago and got a job( Customer service Mgr) of $48000 per annum.
He called it "survival job"....is this enough for a family of 3 in Canada?
What is the average salary of the so called "survival jobs" in canada?.
Kindly assist. Need your comments and views. Just to prepare my mind!

That's about $4000 a month.
I really want to know what the average incomes are like in Canada if this is survival...

I would not classify that as a survival job. I think it's fairly decent but if he is expecting to make 100,000 a year at some point, then maybe this is survival to him.

Then, What is the average income of this "Survival Job" ?

Every person has to define survival job for themselves. I suppose a survival job is any job that you are not really happy with but take it for the short term while you try to find something better. Still, it's hard to call something a survival job when you are making pretty good money while many Canadians as well as immigrants are living on much less.

You can find minimum wage at http://canadaonline.about.com/library/bl/blminwage.htm

You can see some average wages according to occupation at http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/labr69a-eng.htm and here http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/labr74a-eng.htm

Thanks Leon,
Actually I was hoping to make just a little more than that (about $5000) as an entry level college professor/lecturer.
So the slotting of $4000 as "survival" made me feel very awkward indeed.

Also, with both husband and wife earning do you suppose between $6-7000 is about the median income in Canadian middle class households?
By my calculations, this amount should help pay mortgage for a reasonable home and put away a modest saving after taxes.
Are my calculations wrong?

With a income of $48,000...You will not be getting $4000, you have topay taxes..and other deductions...so it will be around $3000 a month or so.... $48000 is kind of the average..the monthly household combined income was $68000 last year..

Hi,

I dont say it a survival job unless he was really earning a high income back home, for me a survival job is a casual job out of your own field like working in some resturant , gas station as security officer or driving a cab. In survival job you earn around 400-500 CAD dollar per week after tax but this friend of us is earning about $800/per week after tax which is really good for a family of 3 .

Cheers

Dear f2,

could you please share u'r freind's educational background and previous work exp. along with which country he is from...
And to answer u'r question thought the survival is all relative concept.....to me $48K is little above than
the basic survival level...

Thanks

Hi,

I think he is England qualified thats why he got the job easily compare to the other asian subcontinent people whose qualification does not have much worth at International Level. This is what i beleive that if someone has a qualification from countries like England, Australia, America he/she will get the job easily compare to others.

Cheers

$3000 is what he must be making and it is indeed less for his education ...

why do guyz worry .. even if you move with 20 years of exp you will start with less salary thats the rule everywhere!

F2,

your profile shows you applied for immigration in 2007 and you landed in 2010...my god.
that is 4 years.........does it take so long under Fast Track also.

Its strange.
We had lost hope and given up before they came back to us from the blues.
Evrything was then rushed within 6months.
The new fast track is just 12months and you don have to wait that long
All the best pal1
