I never really found a legit answer for this question, maybe my searching skills aren't that great..

The supporting documents that I am sending, like birthday card, calling cards, things that I would like back.. Do I get them back at all, or will they send those back to me when they are done with them. Do I have to request that I would like them back?

I don't think they send anything back. You don't need to send the originals though - just make copies of the cards and send those. You'll be fine. That's what we did....

Okay, if that works then thats good. Thank you

You should get them back, some people have specifically asked for them.

I actually suggest that people scan items of proof (unless an original is mandatory), that way you can keep the originals safe.
If the VO really needs an original, you have it to send anyway.

I have sent originals just to be on the safer side...and I have had a lot of people telling me that they return them.

All our supporting documents (photos, letters, etc) were scanned or copies. I figured if they wanted to see the original copy of the lease or photo or whatever, they would ask. Personally, I would be sad if the original cards or whatever were lost. But even if it was not an emotional concern, it is a self-protective action. If these items got lost somewhere along the way and CIC requested another copy, if you have the originals with you, you can duplicate them again to create a new copies for the immigration process.

And as we know, applications do get lost once in a while.

Some forum members have reported that things were returned; others have reported that things were not returned. It depends on the visa office and the visa officer, it seems. To be safe, only send copies, unless the instructions specifically ask for an original.

They ask that you do not send calling cards anyways, but I suppose you could scan/take a picture of them showing that you have them.

What do you mean by this?

The region specific guide for the Philippines explicitly tells you not to send calling cards as proof of contact. Some other region specific guides say the same thing. If your guide doesn't actually tell you not to send them, and you don't have any other proof of phone contact, then you might as well try. One person on the forum reported that her phone cards were accepted as proof.

My region specific guide doesn't say such a thing so I guess its okay to send those? I don't wanna send them in, in case I need them again.. I guess I can just take a picture of all of them and send that in...

Yes, just photocopy them.

photocopies are perfectly acceptable ( except where they state originals are required). So I think you're good glak1234
