I'm doing some work for a civil engineering firm, mostly data management stuff. Instead of hiring me the company wants to subcontract the work to me. What sort of business license would I need to obtain, if any?

You'll need a business license from your city or municipality. It's normally a simple process but there will be a fee. You might also need to register a business name with your province but that will depend on where you are. If you are going be opening a business bank account and accepting cheques in a business's name, you'll want to make sure that name is registered with the province.

Thanks Scott.

Do u pay more taxes as subcontractor or less?

In usa many work as sub contractor as they pay less taxes and also charges per diem, mileage lunch expenses which reduces the taxes at the end.

What's the case in Canada?

If you don't want hassle of doing the accounts and tax yourself, then you can be an employee under an umbrella company. They will take care of every thing and just pay you salary based on the income you receive.
