hi there

I have a confusion on my study points for which i am not getting any solution. please help me.

I have a masters degree(MBA) but my total year of study are 16(not 17) as my masters was only for one year. another point to be noted here is i had to extend my duration of study from one year to one year and half due to personal reasons and date on my degree is nov 2009 which if you consider against my date of starting my masters is after more than 2 years(that is I started in sept 2007 and got my degree in nov 2009). now im confused if i can claim full points against my studies or have to settle with the points of Bachelors degree.
i asked couple of lawyers but some of them said they only goning consider masters degree and date on degree which therefore conclude to full 17 years, so full points. But some of them said as my course was intended for one year it will not matter how long I took to complete it, so have to claim points on bachelors degree.

please help!!!

Hi,

Both lawyers are correct, however I tend to lean towards the 17 years side as your official documents show these dates. CIC asks for ful time study or full time equivalent study, if your MBA was on full time basis, then, they have to consider it 2 yrs, if it's part time, then, I'm afraid they will consider it one.

Eventually, it is the CIC officer who has to be convinced on this.

This is what the guide explains on FTE:

"Points are awarded for earned educational credentials as well as the number of years of full-time studies or full-time equivalent studies. To be awarded points, you must meet both stated criteria.

Full-time studies: At least 15 hours of instruction per week during the academic year. This includes any period of workplace training that forms part of the course.

Full-time equivalent studies: If you completed a program of study on a part-time or accelerated basis, count the length of time it would have taken to complete the program on a full-time basis. "

Dear,

I've checked the OP6, and I guess the below is self explanatory.

"Note: Subsection 78(3) of the IRPR provides that points are to be awarded on the basis of the single educational credential that results in the highest number of points. For example, an applicant with a master‘s degree that was completed after 16 years of education, and who spends an additional year in school after obtaining it would be awarded 22 points. That the applicant spent an additional year in school does not turn a 16 year master‘s degree into a 17 year master‘s degree and would not result in being awarded 25 points."

Dear AmSingh,

As you said that your master was of only One year duration . Although it was stretched to 2 years . But officially Masters Degree in India requires 2 years to complete it does not matter its from Full time or Distance mode . Again it should be from University recog. by statutory government council .

So i my view you will not get points for Masters.

Hope it clears to you some extend.

Regards

As I understand, there's no MBA in the world which is for 1yr duration. The minimum course duration of MBA is 2yrs. So, the MBA u took is either a Diploma in Mgt - or u have obtained it from some unrecognized institute. A 1yr program will not be accepted by CIC... u'd get no points for it.

Since your certificate will show a two year period, I would lean on that if I were you.

Thank you very all of you for the replies.

I have done my MBA from UK and from recognised university. All the uni and clgs have one year so is any masters in uk. So I am pretty sure that my degree is recognised but its the no. of years which are taking a toll on me. that is to summarise following is the situation:

1. Recognised Masters degree.
2. Official course duration 1 year but extended to 2 year for personal reasons of mine.

how many points should i claim???

I still feel there wouldn't be any points for a 1yr Masters.
However, if there were any, it'd be only for the actual course programme - 1yr. Not for how long it took u to complete.

Hi Qorax,

Please advise, will MBA from IGNOU fetch 25 points?

The duration of MBA from IGNOU is 2 years and 6 months.

Yes.
But ask a consultant & s/he'd say No. They'd opine that it's a 'correspondence course' - so no points. However, u do get points 'coz it's a DLP & thru a 'recognized' univ -- which has been established by an Act of Parliament.

Dear, here is my earlier response. You get 22 points.

Hi amsingh,
What does your transcript say? I think Mezo2009 is correct. You will be able to claim 22 points.

Too bad there are no points in between 22 and 25. Or can we claim points like 23 or 24??...

Thank you very much! Qorax Sir.

I appreciate you for being so helpful!

Regards.
