I'm a US citizen who is going to be attending NBCC this coming fall and haven't been able to apply for my study permit right away due to the lack of funds. Now that I have the tuition as well as $10,000, I had some questions I hope someone could answer. I attempted to call my local visa office multiple times but they are unresponsive (Is there someone else I could call?).

  • For a study permit, can you only apply outside of Canada or may you apply at the port of entry as well? I understand the port of entry is typically where the study permit is issued.
  • If a study permit can be issued at port of entry, how long would it take to receive the permit?
  • My family wants to support me financially while I am abroad; would there need to be a letter of support of some kind? If so, what should be enlisted on that letter?
  • Due to being accepted into NBCC and being from the US, it's nearly impossible to find a student loan to study abroad for various reasons (it's not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education unlike Canadian universities). Will paying out of pocket be a problem instead of having a loan while I attend NBCC?

After attending NBCC and completely my course program I plan to transfer to a Canadian university. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

1. US citizen can apply at the port of entery
Quote: "The study permit is issued by CBSA officers at the POE. Students from the United States, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and Greenland can also apply for a study permit at the POE when they arrive in Canada."
2. It is issued at the same time.
3. No Idea
4. No, it won't be a problem.

Thanks! I really wish someone knew about the letter though or at least had a link.

Proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada. In addition to the cost of tuition, you should have at least CAD $10,000 available to cover your living expenses.
Please submit:
  • bank and credit card statements, bank book covering the past six months
  • any additional supporting documents demonstrating a reliable source of funds (letter of undertaking and financial documents from parent or sponsor, tax declarations, official letter of scholarship or financial award, investments, salary receipts, income from rental properties etc.)
  • if lodging arrangements have been made, please provide proof of these
  • if your tuition has already been paid, please provide proof of payment
