Hello,

I will be studying at McGill University for the Fall Term which I have been accepted for by the University. I have also been nominated by University in the UK to study at Waterloo University for the Winter Term, however registration has not begun there so I have not yet actually been formerly accepted at that University. I am just having trouble deciding whether I actually need a Study Permit or not?

Since I won't be at McGill for more than six months, I've seen that I won't need a Study Permit for just this but since I would be studying collectively for over six months, surely I would need one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated because at the moment I am not sure what to do!

Kind regards,
Edward Gwatkin

Eventhough your study may be less than 6 months, should you have other plans, like to continue your studies, you can still applying for study permit. In this case you've to add a letter of intent to inform the visa officer that you're aware your study is less than 6 months which can be carried out without study permit, but you've other plans to continue.

For studies/exchange programs exceeding 6 months, foreign students have to apply for study permit in advance. You may read more about the new rules if there're exemptions to this rule.

thanks alot!

is there a letter of intent form to add to the application or would I just type up a separate document?

You are welcome!
Just type it on a separate document just like writing a formal letter. If you apply online, attach this document to last section for ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS. If you're already attaching documents to this file, then merge them as one document and upload to the file.

ok cool, one last question, do you know the difference between the student exchange letter and the letter of acceptance they ask for when uploading the documents you need for the application?

If you're applying as an exchange student, you'll need to upload your acceptance letter from the university as an exchange student. A full time degree-seeking student will also upload a letter of acceptance proving that they'll be full-time student. Apart from this, they all acceptance letters. You can renew your study permit inside Canada should you decide to preceed.
