i only have one suggestion ..i know ur looking for ur sons best interest but i think u should ask him to find information on this forum and his career that way he will learn a lot and understand challenges he faces....

i want to study Mathematics and Physics at undergraduate level. so far i have looked few unis such as UofT, Mcgill and a few others. i really like the course content at UofT. Just wanted to know if they accept students in january? On their website it says the next academic year starts in September. Also is it possible to transfer from one uni to another after completing the first year?

i believe they do have winter intake but not sure for undergrad..UoT is a very competitive and ranked university so admission is difficult u need to have good academic standing to get in....

I have emailed them but haven't heard back from them yet, about the Jan intake. I would have to take a gap year if they don't... What sort of a level equivalent grades will I need to be considered for this course? And are there any specific subjects or anything required apart from maths and physics a levels?

I joined McGill after finishing my A Levels last year.

Post your sons grades and I'll tell you which universities will accept him. Mention AS grades if you dont already have the entire A Level results.

If you have any other specific questions, let me know.

Its the son Lol, I have finished my a levels and am awaiting results although I have already achieved full a levels in
maths (A) Physics (A) and chemistry (C). I am waiting for
my further maths one.. How is McGill? What course are
you doing?

I'm doing a double honours in Math and Econ.

McGill is great and the city is amazing.

You will probably have to apply to the Faculty of Science if you want to pursue math/physics. The entry requirements there are like AAA

Also, the math in A Levels are a joke compared to what you'll face here. A good deal of new admits cant handle it and change programs.

University of Toronto is great aswell but its too big in my opinion. First year lectures there typically have 1000+ students attending each class.

How is the maths part? Are the concepts hard in general or can one do fine if he puts a good amount of effort in it?
I do not mind Montreal but I have heard that it will be difficult to find a job if you don't speak fluent French, is that true?
I do not mind big lecture classes as they decrease dramatically after the first year...
AAA for UofT or McGill ? Also, given I have done further maths and I am pretty good at it, will the transition still be challenging?

Did you apply through the Ontario application service? I registered for it but I am completely lost on how to enter my subjects, school and sixth form and GCSE and a level grades.
Thanks for the help

AAA for McGill, UoT is a little lower but not by much.

Math is different here, well its more american. When I did math in A Levels, they didnt sub divide it into stuff like calculus etc. It was just "Math"and "Further Math".

Each topic like Calculus, Algebra is learnt to a great depth here. The exams are quite hard as well.

Typically the first year of math courses are weed out courses to remove people who cant handle it from the program so it will be hard to cope at first.

Yes, its quite hard to get a job in Montreal if you are not reasonably fluent in French.

Honestly, you cant go wrong with UoT or McGill. Pick whichever one you think suits you better.

You have to apply through the Ontario thing for UoT but not for McGill. McGill has their own admission form on the website.

Hopefully I can score a good grade for my 4th a level.
Do you know anyone who applied through the Ontario online service? It would be really helpful.

Is it actually a weed out course or just a general conclusion?

I'm guessing the academic year is the same as here in the UK? So there won't be any January intakes for the under grad. courses?

How much would the living cost be roughly for the first year? Like the accommodation...travel...food?
