Hi,

I am an international student enrolled at the University of Alberta. I came here August 2013 on a student visa. I had to get mine extended in 2015 because my passport had expired. It got approved up until June of 2018. However, due to a major change and a few extra courses I am scheduled to graduate May 2019. Which is why I am seeking a second extension from June 2018. I have a few questions:

Last winter( Winter 2017 semester) I fell ill and had to reduce my course-load to part-time status, but only for that semester. I have stayed continuously enrolled. This reduction was done half way through the semester. During march I started working as with a tutoring agency as a tutor. My contract says I am an "Independent Contractor", hence they did not take my SIN number or my visa information. The payment is done directly through mailing in via handwritten cheques. The contract specifically mentions that our relationship is not that of employer/employee.

Obviously, since in march 2017 I was a part-time student I am getting worried as to whether working as a tutor independently would affect my chances of geting the second extension. Others have told me that since my agency does not record SIN numbers and my contract says independent contractor, the visa officer has no way to penalize me on it.

Cheers.

You worked illegally - no question about that. Having said that, your chances of being caught are likely very low.

Note that you'll need to make sure all of the rest of your semesters are full time (even if you have to take courses you don't need). If you more than one part time semester, refusal of the PGWP is pretty much guaranteed.

I see. I also heard that the way CIC finds out when you worked is that they check your SIN numbers. So if the agency i was an independent contractor for didn't take my SIN number and they usually send me hand written cheuqes, it shouldn't be a problem right? I honestly didn't think of this then.

Also. Last winter i was parttime, but only for that semester. I continue as fulltime next fall.. Anither issue is right now(summer) I am employed by the University on campus fulltime. Will that be an issue?

Edit: For my summer on campus work, before I accepted the offer I registered in courses full time for next fall.. so the whole part-time in winter - summer on campus work- full time again in fall thing is legit ?

**Edit: I'm gonna post my second question as another post since it seems noones asked this.
