So I'm an epidemiologist . Today was scanning the literature to find a study in infectious disease because I have to teach a critical appraisal workshop . Found this which may be of interest:
Aldridge R.W., Yates T.A., Zenner D., White P.J., Abubakar I., & Hayward A.C. (2014). Pre-entry screening programmes for tuberculosis in migrants to low-incidence countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis. The Lancet Infectious Diseases, 14(12), 1240-1249.
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(14)70966-1/abstract
Study indicates pre-screening is only cost-effective when the TB prevalence in the country of origin is greater than 350 per 100 000 population. So I looked up TB rates in my husband's (applicant) country Zambia, which has prevalence just under, at 338/100,000 (yr 2013). This is a relatively recent study but you can see that a lot of applicants are required to do TB pre-screening but it's not cost effective given the prevalence of TB in their country.
You can see WHO infobase here: http://gamapserver.who.int/gho/interactive_charts/tb/cases/atlas.html
(change indicator to: estimated prevalence of TB all forms per 100,000 , 2013).
