I am currently on maintained status after applying for an extension of my visitor record. I came to Canada on a study permit, finished my diploma. Got married to a Canadian citizen during my second year at college. He's planning on sponsoring me and we're applying for sponsorship this month. I didn't apply for a PGWP because I had a part-time semester in my second year due to some personal family issues. I never worked during that part-time semester to avoid breaking any rules.

The problem is his father. He has a very anti-immigrant mindset especially against ones like me who come from a third world country. He thinks we're all here just to take advantage of Canadians and thinks I'm doing that to his son. Now he's threatening us, saying that we have to get a divorce and that my husband needs to call immigration and get me deported.

I have never broken any immigration rules and laws. I have maintained my legal status.

I'd like to know if he can sabotage my future here in Canada. Even though I haven't broken any rules, I've been panicking at the thought of my application being sabotaged because of him.

Is there any steps I can take to protect my future against the threats of me being reported to immigration and getting me deported?

Any suggestions or input would be highly appreciated. Thank you

Only CBSA / IRCC can deport you.

If you and your husband are in a genuine relationship and he is ready to sponsor you, then he should submit the sponsorship application as soon as he can. You should be aware that he can withdraw this application at any time. So it really depends on the strength of the relationship with your husband.

Otherwise the only real way to protect yourself is to make sure you have plans to keep your status legal in Canada yourself, for example getting another study permit and completing a full time program in Canada so that you can qualify for a PGWP.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your response. We're definitely doing the sponsorship. I will also look into potentially getting a study permit.
