Hi All!

So I've been a Canadian permanent resident since June 2000. so 12+ years now! I did my schooling in the US where I met my now spouse. He is American, and we are in the final preparations of our sponsorship/PR application for him to move up here. We are applying outland as he is finishing some courses in the States while (hopefully!) the application is processed.

BUT!

About a year ago - my mother and I both (my father and sister already became Canadian citizens last year) submitted our application for citizenship as we both decided it was time to and I finally had enough physically present days in the last 4 years to qualify for citizenship (due to being out of country studying for 2 years) . We submitted the application a year ago - received the study package and were preparing to hear about dates for the exam/swearing in ceremony etc.

BUT!

Just last week I received a letter in the mail from immigration wanting more info regarding my residency in Canada (ie. travel documents for every time i've left Canada since my arrival as a permanent resident, passport photocopies, T4's and a whole whack of stuff..basically an entire other application as if we didn't have enough to organize with the PR package)

My mom did not receive the same thing - just me. I think because they are questioning the period i spent at school in the US. Anyways - I've completed the form they needed and given them the requested items they need.

My question/concern is once they receive my PR/sponsorship application - if my citizen application is flagged due to them reviewing the materials I've given them - will it affect my husbands PR/Spousal application???? Do you think the two are linked and is there some unwritten rule I don't know about that says you can't be applying for citizenship AND sponsorship of a spouse also??

Any advice,help would be appreciated!

Sigh!

Hey,

I'm not a specialist and it's a very specific question, but PR are allowed to sponsor as long as they are in Canada, so since your PR is valid, it should not be a problem - they are wondering if you qualify for citizenship, but not for PR I suppose...

More experienced members might be able to tell you more.
Good luck,
Sweden

I agree with Sweden. You should have no problems sponsoring your husband as a PR (the citizenship application is a separate process). However as a PR, you must be living in Canada to qualify to sponsor your husband.
