I am currently in Canada under a post-graduate work permit after completing my education at the University of Calgary. I have been in Canada now for a total of 6 years. I recently got married and my wife is an Indian citizen. She would like to come to Canada and work if possible. Here are a few questions i had:

1) Should she apply for an open work permit in India first, and then apply for a visa to immigrate here? The processing time on the CIC website says it will take 2 months, but am concerned it might take much longer than that.

2)Should she apply for a dependant visa in India(TRV-visitor visa and show proof of relationship there)? I heard this only takes about 2 weeks to process, after which i was told she can apply for a work permit here in Canada.

3) Should she apply for a dependant visa in India, and then come here and apply for permanent residency here in Canada with me? I am eligible to apply for permanent residency, but wanted to apply for it together with my wife to make the process easier.

4)If she comes here on a dependant visa, would she be eligible at all to work part time?

5)When people say spousal visa, is it in reference to a TRV-visitor visa or is it a different visa application?

6)Can we apply for a spousal dependant visa and a open work permit simultaneously? That way she can come here in live in Canada with me while her work permit is getting processed.

Thank you in advance for your time! I am aware this is a lot of questions, but we are a young married couple and just want to find the quickest way to live together.
Even if you could answer one or two of the questions above, it would be really helpful. Really appreciate it.

Scroll down to the section "If your spouse wants to work in Canada".

Then apply*:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/work.asp?countrySelect=IN#applications

*She may be able to apply online; I gave the link to the paper application to show you all the requirements: yes she'll need a TRV as well, application is simultaneous.

Thank you! When we checked with an immigration officer, they said we have to wait for the work permit to get processed first before applying for a TRV.

Also, if her work permit gets rejected, will she still be granted a spousal visa so she can at least come to Canada?

Thank you

Did you really speak to an immigration officer, or a CIC call centre agent - if the latter, they don't always get it right :(. Follow the instructions in the application package I linked, particularly the notes concerning spouses of PGWP holders.

If her OWP is refused, she can apply for a visitor visa, but be aware that she might not get one, depending on the reasons for which the OWP was refused.

(And a final aside: a spouse visa is for spouses/common law pRtners of Canadian citizens or PRs.)
