Spousal Sponsorship / inland application

My spouse came in canada as a tourist and we are planning to apply for inland immigrant application/ family sponsorship. in order to do that
we need to file an extension of his stay and open work permit. my question is how long is the extension if it's granted? and how many times can apply for extension?
because the processing of inland application is a total of 26 months.

My spouse have multiple entry tourist visa which in 9 months the visa validity will expire. visa itself will expire in 9 months not the duration of stay in canada.
because duration of stay in canada usually 3 months to 6 months that can be apply for extension.

If you submit an Open Work Permit app WITH the inland PR app BEFORE his current status expires, you will not need to extend his stay. Once his current visitor status expires, he will have Implied Status until he receives the OWP, which should be valid for 2 years or so.

He does not need a valid TRV to remain in Canada.
