Hello,

My wife has an application in to sponsor me (inland) for PR. We just received acknowledgement of receipt of the application and were requested to send in the background form.

I sent in medical exam results with the original application, and the online application status says that I passed. They said I don’t need an interview or fingerprints. The only thing they want from me (for now) is the background check, which I can send in tonight.

1) About how long until I receive the “approval-in-principle” that will allow me to get an Ontario health card?

2) I see references to applications for an Open Work Permit, but I don’t see the actual fees for this form. Is there a separate application for this anymore, or is it an automatic “implied application” with the PR application?

Thank you for reading and for any responses!

I don't think you qualify for health coverage until you become a PR. I am not sure how the rule is for inland applications, but for outland the coverage starts 3 months after the landing.

When you do the inland app you have the option to apply for a OWP, it usually takes 4 months or so to be approved. It isn't an automatic "implied application" with the PR application. You can apply for it along with the PR app but they are different apps. I believe the fees for it are around $255.

Once you have a letter from CIC saying "We are pleased to advise you that you are eligible to apply for permanent residency" blah blah blah .. That is considered AIP. At that point you can take that letter and apply for OHIP.

It is NOT an implied application. You should have sent that along with your PR application and with the fees.

As mentioned there is no implied status with an inland PR app. The OWP app gives implied status.

When did you originally enter Canada and how long was your status for then?

Thank you for everyone’s responses.

Part of why I’ve been confused is that when I pull up the details for OWP, the link for paying fees doesn’t actually list OWP as part of the fee schedule:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/fees/index.asp

Am I missing something, or how am I meant to pay for the OWP application and provide proof of payment?

^^ Do you have any idea about how long would that normally take? (Assuming that, once I send off the background information response tonight, they have all they need from me including a passed health exam.)

You need to look at the work permit fees. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/fees/result.asp?countrySelect=CA&lob=wp

As Rob already asked, when did you enter Canada and how long of a stay were you given?

I’ve been back and forth between the U.S. and Canada—but mostly in Canada—since September 2016. (I telecommute with a company in the U.S.) I was first here on an ordinary visitor visa (no paperwork), then I applied for a NEXUS and was put on a visitor pass. After my wedding in July I renewed the visitor pass. Our first application for sponsorship was kicked back for being incomplete; only now do we have a complete application in.

When I go to my CIC account and try to apply for a work permit, it leads me through a series of questions, at the end of which it just tells me I’m eligible for spousal sponsorship.

Also, the page “Application for work permit inside Canada – extend, change conditions or initial work permit – includes open work permits” (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...onditions-extend-your-stay-canada-worker.html) has a link “pay your fees” … which goes to the link I posted above, which makes no reference of a work permit.

So, confused … :-(

You still haven't said what your current status is and how long it is valid for.

You can't go through your MyCIC account. You can only submit a paper application for the OWP.

I really don't understand how you are having trouble seeing the fees, especially since I posted a direct link. Here it is again http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/fees/result.asp?countrySelect=CA&lob=wp.

What was your last entrance to Canada?

You can't apply for the OWP unless you are currently in legal status (meaning it's been no more than 6 months since your last entry or since you got an extension of visitor status).

Sorry … my current status is a visitor, on a visitor pass. It was valid for 6 months back in August … I’ll be renewing it early next week.

I see the fees—and I now see that the link at the bottom is not the same link as the other pages about paying fees for an open work permit. That link *does* allow payment of an arbitrary fee … apparently that’s how OWP fees are to be paid, as there’s no drop-down option for them?

Rob_TO: My last entrance to Canada was in early December. I should have renewed the visitor pass at that time but figured the sponsorship application we’d submitted in October would cover me. (Then we had to resubmit because we’d overlooked one thing they wanted.) I drove to Niagara today, but the guy said they don’t take walk-ins off the street. I suggested I could drive across the border then come back, but he said that they’d only renew that way Tuesday through Friday.
