Hello, my boyfriend is coming to Canada next month to visit. We want to get married so i can sponsor him. I am not sure I understand the whole procedure, everything is so confusing.
We want to get a marriage license as fast as possible and then from what I understood it takes about 3 months to get the marriage certificate. He will stay here meanwhile. Then we want to apply for sponsorship, probably outland, since the average waiting period is of 6 months (in Bucharest). In this case he will be staying here and he would have to go back for a possible interview. If they do request an interview how long will it take to get a visa afterwards? Since he won't be able to re-enter the country (Canada) I wonder how long we will have to be apart. Can I assume that in about 1 year the whole procedure will be over if everything goes to plan? Will they extend his visa on the basis that we are married and have applied for sponsorship so he can stay here until they request an interview? Since I am a student and have received the regular student loan will that be an obstacle? I know that they supposedly don't care how much money you make, if I prove that my parents have sufficient income and we will be staying with them until he can legally find a job will that be enough?
I am extremely confused and I don’t know what to do, but we have been apart for two and a half years (with short visits) and I really need find a way for us to be together soon.
I will be thankful for any suggestions.

Hi, from what i know (when i got married in canada), you apply for the marriage license and then have three months to use it. you are given it when you apply, the same day.

it is likely that he will receive an extension to stay longer based on the fact that you applied for PR. I am not sure about the other questions you asked in terms of interviews, etc.

good luck!

Re: Marriage Certificate

Immigration WILL NOT take what you sign at the wedding, you need the certificate and that is the three month wait. Service Canada WILL NOT take what you sign at your wedding to change your name, once again you need the certificate. It's annoying but it's the reality.

thank you for answering, but from what I read after obtaining a marriage license you have to get a marriage certificate (which take 3 months), because the marriage license only gives you a permission to get married, but doesn't actually signify that you have the rights of a married couple.

Hi there, I had my marriage certifciate the day I was married, brought it home from the church.. Not sure why your waiting 3 months. but I had mine and this is what I sent with my application back in September 2011. Good luck to you.
