Hello,

My wife and I, want to sponsor her parents from PRC.. My question is, does my wife have to be the principal applicant or can i be the principal applicant to sponsor her parents? I am a naturalized canadian citizen and my wife is pr status of June with no ocupation.I do know that if she is the principal applicant I will have to co-sign.

Also I was talking to a few consultants, but they seem to be giving me different information. Because my wife just recently obtained Pr status two months ago.. One consultant told us that my wife had to have lived in Canada for at least one year before applying and another said the opposite.. so I am perplexed by this information.

I looked on the cic webpage and didnt find any information regarding her stay as a pr a requirement for sponsorship. my question is, does my have to be landed for one year before applying?

Along with sponsoring her parents we want to sponsor her brother, my question is regarding the age limit. As I understand it, as long as my brother in-law stays in full time school before turning the are of 22 he will still be considered as a dependent even if he is over 22 and continuing his studies. I was wondering if my my understanding is correct?

Thank you for any response to the questions posted above.

You can not sponsor her parents and brother she has to you are the co signer. So even if she is unemployed its both your income that will cover for you both her parents and her brother as their dependant.thats 5 people if you can cover that with your income.
You will be responsible for them for 3 to 10 years depending on age,and the process is around 4 years.
And i believe you said she has only been a PR for 1 month?

Its a big undertaking, I hope you have really thought this through. I won't want to live with my in-laws. If you never tried it before, you should seriously think about it now. Parents and a brother is overwhelming emotionally and financially and could put a strain on your relationship. An undertaking for ten years is a huge commitment. I would wait a year or so and then make a better decision. Sorry but thats just my thoughts on it. I don't mind visiting parents/siblings but forever stays is trouble especially if there are culture/language/religion differences...all the more difficult.

^^^ i know i sound awful but thats my personal opinion.

Thank you for the response, I am aware of the "massive" undertaking by doing this application but I am prepared as best I can. I get along with here family members well and hope to bring them to Canada.

I have been married to my wife for 3 years and it also took me 3 years to bring my wife to Canada. Freaking Hong Kong visa office gave me so much hassle but our relationship with stood it.

If anyone can answer my other two question regarding duration of landed PR status before application and age limit of dependent, I would greatly appreciate the information.

Thank you

the age of the dependant must be under 22 before you apply, unless you can show he is dependant because of university or other education,or is dissabled and is still dependant. Here this will give you the info on the dependant http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/5196E.PDF page 5 also i believe you must be here for a year as a PR before you can apply to sponsor.

mikewong85,

My advice to you, bringing your wife's parents is NOT a good idea. You will be responsible for them financially for 10 years, plus parent-in-law are just pure pain. I have seen many marriages that got destroyed because of the parents-in-law.

I am sorry for telling you this, but I wanted to share with you some advice.
