Sponsoring spouse outside of Canada- tracking?

Hi All,
I have been watching this forum for some time and I have been collecting all of the info I need to apply for my husbands permanent residency in Canada. I'm Canadian, he is Uganda and we are currently residing in Uganda. I see that many of you are tracking you application etc... What I'd like to know is how you are doing that? I assume online but did you set up an account or was it given to you? or by email?
