I am sure a lot of these topics have been covered, but I'm just looking for insight.

My fiance will be moving in with me in May. We are getting married here (in Canada) early August.
He is from the United States.
When is the best time to start an application for permanent residency? I understand an outbound application is the faster route?

I know that the wait times are long. If, after he has been here 6 months, would he have to go back to the USA? Or can we apply for an extension? I read that you should send an open work permit application in with your PR application - would that ensure he stays in the country past the 6 month 'visitor' period?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

A really good starting point for answering your queries is to read the first post on this forum. This will give you a good overview of what type of sponsorship you can do i.e. if you have lived together for more than one year continuously you can apply as commonlaw, as opposed to wait until August when you can apply as married.

Once you've had a good read of that, feel free to ask any other specific questions you may have.

Thank you. I guess I just kind of jumped the gun.. it was on my mind! Ill do a bit more reading, thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

No problems, Leon has posted a really good over view of all different types of applications and outland vs. inland etc, its just a really good post to give you an overview of the process, and then of course there will be other questions you will have and so just ask them.
