Hi all,

I'm in the final stages of my citizenship process (waiting for oath invitation) and currently pregnant due end of March. i will be leaving Canada to have my baby in order to be with my immediate family for support. I have already notified CIC of my extended absence so that they do not schedule me during that time.

As a PR, I know that I would have to sponsor my child for PR which would be a lengthy process (by now, I've very used to lengthy processes). I also understand that I would need to be in Canada to sponsor him if I am not a citizen yet.

My questions are how it would work after he is sponsored for PR? I'm assuming that long before that process is complete I will become a Canadian. Can I then sponsor him for Canadian citizenship or would he need to be in Canada 4 out of 6 years like all other PRs before he can obtain citizenship? Another question is do you foresee any issues with extending his time in Canada while this process is happening, considering that he would be a baby?

I could not get this info online and the call center is impossible to get through right now. Appreciate any help on this!

Hopefully some of the senior members have some advice for you. Is the father Canadian? If not it might be a better idea to pay for your family to come to Canada for a visit for the birth so you don't need to deal with sponsoring your baby. Seems complicated!!!

Hi and thanks for that. No, the dad is not Canadian and unfortunately he is not able to come to Canada at this time. This is why i made the tough decision to go myself. Due to our circumstances, I feel that family time and support are more important than inconvenience and additional expenses.

I hope that someone who has been through a similar situation or is more knowledgeable will be able to give some insight.

Yes and no.
Yes he must be sponsored for PR first, if you are a PR when he's born.

Only after he gets PR status, can you then apply immediately for his citizenship. PRs who are minors do not need to meet the residency requirement for citizenship, as long as 1 parent is a citizen.

That depends, what citizenship will he have?

Thanks Rob for this! Sets my mind at ease.

He would have a citizenship that would not require a visitor visa to Canada.
