Sponsoring family from Afghanistan

Good day everyone,

In light of recent events in Afghanistan...I was wondering if it's possible to sponsor a family from back home? They did not work for any foreign government or military. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

I searched and didn't find anything relevant on this forum.

Hi The family you want to sponsor should have refugee card granted by unhcr in country of their asylum. I think you can’t directly sponsor from their country of origin

They could be sponsored under Group of 5 but need to recognized by UNHRC or a foreign state. They would need to leave the country to do that.

Would they be eligible for economic immigration programs like Express Entry?

Thank you for your reply. Apparently borders are closed or extremely difficult to get out of the country now. I just saw on the news Canada's plan to bring in 20k Afghanis but can't find any information on the process.

Based on everything I have read this program is very targeted and is specifically for individuals who worked in one of the following capacities (along with their families): individuals who worked with the Canadian armed forces like interpreters, individuals who worked in various capacities at the Canadian embassy (e.g. security guards). To the best of my knowledge, it's not an open program where anyone can apply.

Based on further information the program is still extremely targeted but seems to be accessible to human rights fighters, women leaders, reporters, ngo organizers potentially government officials, etc. Essentially anyone at the top of the list of targets for the Taliban. No information released yet since the priority is getting the embassy staff out and shutting down the embassy along with those who acted as interpreters.

I have no new advice for you and your family, apart from saying that their best (probably only?) bet for leaving now is to get out through a land border into a neighbouring country.

I hope they find a path / way out. The situation in Afghanistan right now is really very terrible and sad. You must be so worried about them.
