Hello all,

I've been in reading extensively in the forum as well as in CIC website and couldn't find answer to my question, so any advice will be much appreciated.

I'm a canadian Citizen in the process of sponsoring my parents. I have one sister, which is over 22. She has a severe learning disorder and therefore has a hard time maintaining jobs or making more than (barely) the minimum wage. As a result she's highly financially and emotionally dependant on my parents.

I was wondering if this might qualify her a dependent "Type C":

"The dependant is 22 years of age or older, has depended substantially on the financial support of a parent since before the age of 22, and is unable to provide for himself or herself because of a medical condition."

If so, what would be require of me or may parents to establish that?

Thanks!

You'll certainly need letters from doctors confirming your sister's condition and the impact this condition has on her ability to support herself. If you have letters from any social workers or counselors, that would be good too. We can't tell you if CIC will accept her as a dependent or not.

Note that as of August 1st, the name "Type C" is no longer being used (same for A and B) and 22 has been moved down to 19 years of age:

You'll see the parent / grandparent forms updated sometime in December (likely) to reflect this fact. Note that you'll need to make sure you use the newest version of the forms when sponsoring your parents in January to prevent their application from being rejected.

Thanks for the advice. I've applied before August 2014 (under the previous rules) for the first part of the application (approving me as sponsor). I'm now being asked in the 90 days letter to submit the full application.

Would adding Type C dependent to the application significantly delay it compared with just a simpler parents only application?

Was your sister included as a type c dependent in the initial application?

Unfortunately not. At the time, my sister was doing better so she wasn't included. However, I'm assuming and there is some room for changes? Such as if a new dependent was born or unfortunately passed away. From an income perspective I can cover both her and my parents with no issues.

Thanks,
