Hello,

I am a United States citizen - my husband is a Canadian permanent resident. Is he able to sponsor me if I owe money to the IRS (I have filed my taxes every year and they have deemed me uncollectible) and also have other unpaid debts in America (auto repossession, state taxes, credit card debt, and breaking of my apartment lease)? These are debts which I had before we married, so they have nothing to do with my husband. The total of the debt is under 5K.

Thanks!

You husband may be able to sponsor you if he is a Canadian Permanent Resident living in Canada:

Refer......Who can’t become a sponsor.......

It is the Sponsor that will be required to show that you can support the person(s) they are sponsoring......not the wife (US citizen) debt owed to USA.

However, will advice that you pay up your debt.....and have a clean record.......and note that you will be required to provide Police Certificate from FBI when you submit your application.

Spousal Sponsorship Checklist......
