This is a very specific and tragic situation that concerns my family. I sponsored my mother when she was 79 years old, I qualified and she was healthy, but recently she was diagnosed with Alhzeimer's disease, one day she fainted in the house, I called 911, and she's in hospital since then, in stable condition, yet she cannot move off bed, eat or drink by herself, so basically she needs constant care. I was told I have to pay hospital bills, or nursing home later on, but I can't afford paying housing + 1,600$/month care giving for my mother. Can someone please help? I've heard many stories, nothing concrete, yet my bills are piling up as we speak.
thank you

You might try to transfer your mother to a public hospital that could help you for the bills. Maybe you might have to talk to some family member that if they could help you caring your mother in your house later.

I sympathize with you. My dad has Alzheimer's so I know that it's not easy to deal with. I would suggest that you contact the Alzheimer's Society. Here is the contact info. for local offices across Canada. http://www.alzheimer.ca/english/offices/intro.htm They can provide you with direction to locate appropriate services for your mother. Alzheimer's is not an acute onset disease so my guess is that the fainting and her current medical condition is not related to the Alzheimer's, so it's unlikely that she will need long-term care immediately, at least not because of the AD. Of course your doctor should be talking to you and explaining the reason for the fainting and why she can't eat or drink, and whether she is expected to improve. Did she have a stroke? That sounds possible based on what you've described. Does your mom have OHIP coverage? If so then her medical bills for her hospital stay should be covered by OHIP. Wishing you the best of luck in dealing with this difficult situation.
