Hi guys, I will be a pr soon in QC, CA and would like to sponsor my niece for education. What are the steps involved? I have heard conflicting opinions about adoption versus sponsorship. Any information is great appreciated. Thank you

You would need to adopt her and then sponsor her in order for her to be able to come to Canada as a permanent resident. This won't be possible unless both of her parents are deceased.

If one or both of her parents are still alive, then the only option would be to bring her to Canada on a study permit. What this will involve will depend on her age and whether she would be attending primary / secondary school or university / college. However it's safe to assume that tuition will be at least $13K per year since she is a foreign student.

Thank you for the info. I really appreciate that. Both her parents are well. She would be attending primary school. I had contacted Montreal English school board and according to them if none of the parents are within Canada, than I will have to legally adopt her. If I can legally adopt her, I might as well sponsor her for a residency and than education. Any suggestions?

Again, you can't sponsor her for residency. She would need to be an orphan in order for that to be possible.

You can certainly legally adopt her - however CIC won't allow you to sponsor her. Since her parents are alive, it will be classified as an adoption of convenience completed for the purpose of bringing her to Canada and the residency sponsorship application will be refused.

You don't need to adopt her, and there is no point to even attempt to do so since her parents are still alive and well. You will not be able to sponsor her for PR.

If you want her to study here she needs to apply for a study permit, and come as an international student. You can be her guardian while in Canada. As mentioned above, she will need to pay international student fees each year to attend school here, and can only stay for as long as she can get study permits for.

I would post your questions to the "international Students" section of the forum, as your situation doesn't have anything to do with family sponsorship.
