Single entry visa extensions

Hi..
I know visit visas are valid only for 6 months, and the visitor must exit and re-enter later.

For a single entry visa, can you apply for new visa while in Canada? Or, do they need to apply for the visa, from the home country?

You can apply for an extension while still in Canada.

Just to clarify, it's the status extension not visa extension.

Not sure what you mean. Not an issue. You can still apply for an extension. If someone is granted a single entry visa there are usually concerns so would suggest trying to minimize how much time is spent in Canada. If you are able to get an extension would rethink a second extension.

Just looked and you seem to be replying for a TRV for compassionate reasons. This isn't a visa to use for coming for the birth of a grandchild unless there was a sudden emergency like premature birth or women ends ups hospitalized for serious health issues.. This is really a shorter visit because someone is near death, has had a sudden medical emergency or for attending a funeral. You should really be applying for a normal TRV. Not sure whether an extension will be granted in these cases.
