Dear immigration experts! Hope all is well. I have an inquiry that I hope I can get an honest, straightforward answer to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I am a Canadian citizen who is planning on bringing my common-law partner of 6 years to Canada, hopefully by August 2021, so we can begin our much awaited life together here in Ontario. I realize that due to the hardships of the pandemic, now may not be the best time but according to the governments family reunification option, it is still possible.
Just to give a little insight into our situation, we have not initiated any sponsorship applications yet but plan to do so immediately upon her arrival in August. If we apply and pay the fees after the first month, say September, approximately how long will it take for her to be able to apply for and receive a Social Insurance Number considering some government offices are experiencing delays or are temporarily closed? Is it possible to apply online? In the past I was told that if we begin sponsorship immediately upon her arrival, she could obtain a temporary SIN within 2-3 months. Is this the case now considering we are still in a lockdown? We realize that obtaining her permanent residence may take years but in the meantime our main concern is that she will be able to look for work without any restrictions.
