Sorry this sounds silly and has been asked often enough. I apologise beforehand...

While filling up the form IMM 5490, I wish to answer the questions in such a way that the VO does not have to "look up" stuff.

For eg: Q. 7 asks if I and the sponsor are related in any way.
My answer would be: My grandfather and my sponsor (husband's) grandmother are brother and sister.

Now, at the end of the form, I wish to attach additional documents and organise them in chronological way describing our entire relationship. Over here, I wish to attach a picture of our grandparents. However, on the form, I do not want to say "please refer to so and so page", thereby avoiding the situation where the VO has to go back and forth between the papers. My logic is that they would eventually come to the additional evidences anyway, so why do I tell them that I have attached additional sheets of paper with the forms title, my name, the works. This way the VO does not have to "look up" anything. I intend to do this for the 'development of relationship' question as well. I believe that maybe this way the VO just goes on reading stuff continuously without having to juggle between the pages, or if its online...you get the picture....

I need your input to know how feasible this idea sounds. Any other ideas from people who have already submitted their papers would be more than welcome. Thanks a bunch! :D

If I'm thinking pre-coffee correctly, that makes you cousins, should be fairly easy for the VO to understand.

Line one, enter your your grandfather and relationship would be your grandfather/his great uncle
Line two, enter his grandmother and relationship would be his grandmother/your great aunt
Line three "further details in attached page xx"

Not cousins, maybe 2nd cousins?
Your husbands grandmother is your great aunt right?

LOL!! No people!! That was just an example. My main question is how to approach the filling up of the forms! I have figured out the grandparents bit. Its the filling up of forms that I need input on!! :)

Line one: good, yes I intend to do that
Line two: good, yes I will write that
Line three: I do not want the VO to "look up" pages. Want to scrap that bit completely. So is that a good idea or no?

The officer handling your file will appreciate knowing where to look for more information. If they need more clarification on your answers, and you've elaborated on it, but they don't know that - it might delay your process if they have to search for it, or ask you for more information.

Hmmm, yes, thought as much. From the deep recesses of mind came this twisted idea that the VO would read everything anyways. Your answer puts things in so much perspective. Thanks! :)

Hold on a second though. If you figured out the grandparents bit, then your grandparent and his are brother and sister correct?

So won't you have a ton of relatives in common? I believe you have to list them all....so you probably won't have a choice about see attached pages since you won't be able to fit them all in the provided space....if they need the info....I think the IO would prefer a " please refer to" vs not getting the info at all and having to call for it.

Having no " please refer to's" doesn't make the immigration officers job easier nessessarily. Having all the information he or she needs and not having to call people to request further documentation makes the IO's job easier!! So if you have enough information you need to have extra pages to refer to, then put them in.

Hi Shamsia....

I thought totally opposite of you. Any question that I knew the answer would take more space than what was provided I answered on a separate piece of paper and in the space provided wrote "Please see pg ... of attached."

Every question got a separate piece of paper so as to not confuse them with multiple answers on one page.

I don't know if this helps or not....it is just a suggestion. For me this kept things clear and concise and gave the immigration officer exact instructions on where the information was instead of them having to guess or thinking it was not there and throwing it back in the mail to me as incomplete.

Good luck with your application!!

Hey there, yes Im going to have extra pages at the back of that form which chronologically explain our entire relationship with pictures and other documents. I was thinking that they will go through that anyways, so why bother asking them to 'go here' 'go there'. But what all of you are saying makes sense. There is a reason why they want us to attach additional sheets of paper. Guess I have to throw my weight around and instruct them what to do lol ;D

Yes and being related you would want to well prove your family history. Its not like your siblings or anything, but being cousins you would want to well prove its not just a marriage of conveniance!

I just attached all my extra papers with a paper clip to the back of the form in which they were from and put little labelled tabs on each so immigration knew what was what. If I had say for the essay, three pages for one question, I stapled those pages together before attaching them with the paper clip behind the form, and then put the tab on. It was extremely neat and organized!

Yep, I did explain that our dads are cousins, and we also have a history of meeting in Saudi Arabia as kids, where our dads were working before they shifted to Canada.

Oh I didnt know we could staple stuff! I was going to use paper clips, but the stapling is a new one for me...

Yes your answer definitely helps!! Thank you so much :) I think this way things would be simpler, and not having them think that I did not provide the pre-requisite information...Thanks once again :)
