Hi,

I lost my PR Card and I applied for the replacement today. I plan to travel to Europe in July to visit my family. If I do not receive a new card by then, should I apply for a PRTD in May? I am a bit worried because, according to the Government of Canada website, I need to provide the reason for urgency of my application, and I am not sure if "seeing my family" would be considered an urgent reason to travel without my PR. I purchased the round-trip plane tickets in March.

Do you have any recommendations on what I should do in such scenario? Thank you in advance for your help.

Again, you'd better fly from a boarding US airport, and have someone to send/pick up you by private vehicle. You don't need a PR card to enter through land entry in this way.

Thank you for your response. I recently signed a contract for a new permanent position starting September 1st. Could my employer write a letter to show that it is an urgent case?

You could try - no-one can tell you whether it will work. There are very few reports here that confirm their files have been treated urgently.

On the other hand, routine applications do seem to get turned around in reasonable periods of time. Best is to make sure someone can receive your mail and send it to you if it arrives while you are away.

Thank you for your help everyone. I will rebook my flights to fly to US and I will enter Canada by land, just to be safe. I'm from an eTA required country; do I need to get it to be able to have a layover in Canada?

See this:

This person was able to successfully obtain a PRTD and their `urgent' trip was a personal vacation. They applied for the PRTD from inside Canada, too!

That's wonderful! Thank you so much for linking this post!
I suggest you proceed with caution, but as you will see the person really didn't seem too concerned, because of all of the FB success stories in the private group.

I think it is worth a try. If I apply from inside Canada and my application is denied, am I allowed to reapply from Europe? I will be there for almost three weeks which makes me think I would be able to receive PRTD (in Europe) before I leave.

Just wait for your card...if you didn't ask for urgent service, call them...doesn't make any sense to apply for PRTD again under your situation....

To apply in Canada for PRTD is a headache. If you would like to do so, just apply for a new PR card for lost reason with urgent service. It's much reasonable and possible to do this way. PRTD doesn't shorten any time, and not for general use for people traveling.
A PRTD would be issued much faster than having to wait for a PR Card to be printed and mailed.

Not always...it said an urgent card can be ready in two weeks. And you don't need to send them your passport. Hey, you send them by mail, and your receive your passport back, the mail cost one week at least right? It's almost equal the time for printing a card or visa...every day, hundreds of card is made, only if your card is arranged to do so...

I have already mailed the PR application, but I will try applying for a PRTD as well. Hopefully this will work :)
