Short question about sponsorship and visitor visa

My buddy PR and he got married outside Canada in Europe. In July 2015 his wife came to Canada (visitor VISA six months).

In end of december 2015 they sent sponsorship and work permit application and they got Canada Post approved delivery note what parcel with application has been received.

My question: Her visitor VISA has been expired in middle of January 2015, now they not receive anything from CIC yet, what the status she has then now?

P.s. When I spoke with my nephew he told me that his lawyer said - "Just need sent application and she will have some kind of temporary status while applications is process" its is TRUE?

I am sorry forgot to add:
Yes, They did apply inland
Yes, they did apply for PR (sponsorship) and Open Work Permit together.

also I forgot to add she came from country where don't need visitor visa to stay in Canada BUT she can stay only six months.

p.s. Her time lime:
1. Apr 2015, Get married outside Canada.
2. July 2015, Came to Canada like visitor for six months.
3. Dec 2015 , applied for PR (sponsorship) and Open Work Permit together. (inland app)
4. Jan 2016, visitors six months has been expired.
