I'm a SW at SNF here in San Jose Ca. We have a Canadian residents that wants to move back to Vancouver. Our residents have unknown family member since he was admitted.
Residents requesting to be transfer to a SNF in Vancouver. We want to know what are the necessary things to do and what paperwork's to prepare.

What is SW at SNF? If there are citizens, then they cross the border and return home. If they want to move to a private retirement home, they research homes, apply and wait for a response. There may be waitlist.

Not eligible for provincial long term care because they need to be residents. Again there will be waitlists, and may have no decision on location of LTC.

SW = social worker?
SNF = skilled nursing facility? Equivalent to nursing homes in Canada?

So are they looking for private or public? Do they need 24/7 care. They are not eligible for provincially run long term care facilities until they move to BC and become residents. After a certain time period, they can apply for public LTC. I don’t know the waitlists…maybe years and months.

If private and can afford to pay, they can research LTCs, apply and wait for approval.

The BC goverment website has all the information. Google - long term care British Columbia. For private care, google - private long term care British Columbia.

Assume they are citizens. They will not have access to provincial healthcare until they are residents for a certain period of time so want private insurance.

If they have lived in the US for a long period of time they won’t qualify for health coverage right away. They would need to wait for 2-3 months in order to qualify so transfer may be quite challenging. Do they have US residency status?
