I am an international student from India studying in University of The Fraser Valley in Abbotsford British Columbia. I just came to know that unlikely the previous years when international students could take the summer semester off and work full time for that period, this time the Government have altered some rules where international students cannot take any semester off and work full time rather they are required to be full time students during their study period in all three semesters of the year to get a Post Graduate Work Permit. I even called the helpline to confirm some of the queries but the phone line was busy and it automatically disconnected. I'm in great confusion due to all this matter and need to plan my studies and semester as the new rules states Can you please clarify what are the current rules for international students in respect to 2018 that is it still legal to take summer semester off and work full time or we need to be a full time student to work part time and stay in Canada with the study visa.

It is a scheduled or an unscheduled break in your program? If it's a scheduled break (meaning everyone in your program is taking this time off) - you're fine. If it's an unscheduled break - it's not fine and will result in a refusal of your PGWP.

I am not sure about the scheduled or unscheduled portion because some students take the semester but some of them take off and work full time because the university is on. But this year according to my information the government has made it compulsory to take all the semesters and that is what I'm confused about that are the rules same as before or there are some changes?

I would look at the course description and it should describe how many courses you need to take during each semester within the time required to finish your degree. What program are you in?

Your school should be able to tell you if it's a scheduled or unscheduled break. Generally this is also apparent on the school web site where the program is described.
