Im a 45 year old divorced female, I've been dating a great guy from Canada for 5 years now. I been going to Canada every other weekend ( Friday to Monday) and 2 times during the week to visit him and he has been doing the same (coming to the U.S) on the opposite weeks as I. I've decided to try and get P.R in Canada now and I'm not sure how to go about it and the proper forms I need. Right now I'm a U.S cidisen but I would lime to live in Canada and continue to work at my job in the U.S. We would like to get married in 5 years, he works for the municipal government and has very good benifets if that matters at all. Can someone tell me how to go about this and what forms I need. Thank you. Mary

You'd have to find an immigration class you qualify for here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp

Most of them are geared towards people who have skills and want to work in Canada and many of them require a job offer.

Since you are already dating the guy for a long time and want to get married, why don't you just speed up the marriage a bit so he can sponsor you? That is really the best way for couples.

Are you telling me that there is no hope for P.R unless we get married. I don't want to get married yet just because I'm not sure if we can live together and I hate to get married only to get divorced within a year or two.

It says common law or marriage, can we go down the road with common law

To qualify for common law, you must first live together for a minimum of one full year.

That's right I forgot so I would have to get a 6 month visitors pass, then extend it for another 6 months then my boyfriend can sponsor me. What happens if they don't extend my second 6 month visit does that affect me from applying again right away. I appreciate and thank you for these answers and suggestions. Mary
