Why does it take too long to carry out the security checks on some applicants than others, is it because it is too hard to get the information they look for from some countries? Or does it depend on the number of countries the applicant has been to? Is there a cic link where we can find some information on this?

I am going to try guess,

Some people have been in many countries so they may do security check in couple of them.
Some countries could be seen as more of a security threat than others, especially if Canadian troups are engaged in fighting with anyone.
Sometimes, security checks in some countries just take longer (beauracracy, inefficiency, etc),
Sometimes they might have started on a person's security check and while they wait, they start on another one and by the time the answer comes back, they are already busy with someone else's.
Some people could lie about where they have been to, so they have to make sure the process is soundproof or the effects can be disasterous.
Not sometimes but most of the times, they are just busy and your application is in queue.

Of course, i guessed all the above. I have no real reason why they take so long.

And..

Maybe if the applicant is unlucky, it is all of that you guessed together!!

May be I am one of the victim on long sec check, just keep on waiting after medical for sec check to be completed - I am not even sure what they are doing, I am just guessing. 5 months from medical.

I am not sure either. I have been waiting 4 months and already tired of waiting without any update. If it takes a while to perform the security checks, fine, but at least the officer should provide some update, no matter how small it is, it gives us some power to go on waiting!!!

Hi Maple,

I would imagine that the security checks fall under the general background checking that they do. Since we provide the Police Clearances in the first place, there's probably not that much they need to so from their side, unless they suspect something.

However, I would think that the rest of the time would be checking things such as credit history, bankruptcy, traffic violations (believe it or not, us Australians have to also provide a drivers history with full application), education verification, gaps in employment history, military records if applicable etc. The more doubts a visa officer has, the closer they will scrutinse the application.

The Security Background check is done by CSIS, neither CIC or CHC has any input. Only thing that CIC/CHC gets from CSIS is either a pass or fail, nothing more.

No Credit History or Bankruptcy checks. Even if they did, will not base that for refusal unless there are fraud.

When I got the medical request last March, I was so happy, I thought it is the last step, I was thinking that the security check is so important that it is completed before the applicant is asked to take the medical, but it certainly is not that way.
For me it is like this, when I am tired of waiting, of checking the E case, of the whole immigration thing, I get sth in the mail, and now I am absolutely tired of hearing nothing from the officer responsible for my application, maybe sth is about to leave Buffalo office to my mail box which receives nothing but bills!!!!

Maple,

Same here, did Medicals in March as well, since then no news. e-cas doesn't change from Day1.."We start processing...." and that's it.
