If you need to travel immediately, your only option will be to apply for PRTD to return. Apply as soon as you arrive abroad. No idea how long this will take - for those who are clearly in compliance with residency obligation, it is usually 'quicker' than those who are not, but apart from that, cannot tell you. Therefore your problem will be when you can return - unless you can return by entering USA and crossing a land border (where your expired PR card should be enough)

Obviously you should also apply for PR card but unless your travel is a couple months away may not help you.

Unless you were a protected person, you can travel with your passport with PR card or PRTD to return to Canada.
You do not need to wait for your citizenship or Canadian passport.
