Good afternoon all. As breifly as possible I will explain reason for posting. My wife and I are helping her sister immigrate to Canada on a work Visa as an RN. We started the work process thru an agency and my sister in-law is at the point where we can start to file for the Permanent Residency Immigration / Skilled Worker Application.

The agency of course has offered to start this process for $550 retainer fees plus $1,500 in lawyer fees plus which do not include the $550 app fee and $490 Right of landing fee.

I am questioning whether or not to use the agency's services to start the Visa process or to handle it myself. I am familiar with the process of immigration and I feel like the $2,050 is a little over the top because I know it's just a matter of gathering documents filling out forms and mailing them as each documents are requested.

My wife is Filipino and I was the one who filed for our K-1 and made sure we had all the right documents etc. Originally the K-1 was set to go thru Manila but about 4 months in my wife's work visa to Canada came thru so she moved to Canada and we finished up the K-1 thru the Canadian embassy on her side and of course she's here in the US now.

Yes the K-1 process was time consuming but it is not hard to file papers and my sister in laws status is not a difficult one. She is not married, no children and has a job opportunity thru the agency.

Should i tackle the Visa process for my sister in law or let the agency do it along with their lawyers? That $2,050 feels like it would be better spent supporting my sister in law when she first gets there and settles in to work.

Thanks for the advice!

Hi Patos,

Most of us here feel it can be done without lawyers, but it really depends on individual circumstances. (BTW - the lawyer's fees can get a lot higher than that). It would help to understand - What exactly has this agency already done for your sister-in-law?

Your post is a little confusing because you talk about both a work visa and permanent residence - they are not the same - PR is like a US "green card." The fees you mention are for the PR application, so I assume you have been told that your sister-in-law is qualified for PR.

To get you started, here is the link for information on applying for permanent residence through the Federal Skilled Workers program.

And, if you chose the do-it-yourself route, there are lots of nurses on this forum (you can search the forum) who can advise you...

Patos,

The immigration process is easy to do and I have seen lots of applicants and few friends who did on their own just by reading the instruction guide and just ask here or on the filipino forum for some clarification. It is very straight forward though a minor error can set u back 2 months but it is known that consultants sometimes do makes errors too. I suggest to take the self-assessment first then see if your points are higher than normal say.. 70+ do-it-yourself otherwise get a consultant just to be sure you pass the initial phase.

God Bless
