(This query is on behalf of my friend who doesn’t have ID so im posting)

He got accepted in Ryerson university for fall 2019 and will apply for his study permit in june maybe as an undergraduate student & prepared all his documentation accordingly.

He’ll be living with his family members but unfortunately they might be moving to another city although its not 100% confirmed.

If that’s the case can he change university after one semester?

or should he apply to the university nearby where the family will be moving and get the admission letter? so that after arriving in canada he can easily start his fall semester there and cancel the admission at Ryerson.

Hope you got my point here.
Any advice/suggestions is mostly appreciated.

It's all personal choice and whether the other University will accept the one semester he does at Ryerson. If he has not applied for the study permit then I think on a practical level it would be better to move to the other city and start college thereby since you are saying it's not 100% confirmed so it could be the case that your friend will be separated if the move does not go through.

Universities are generally more willing to transfer credits between other universities so really you would have to find the preferred University in the other city and ask them if they would accept a credit transfer from Ryerson, or the other way around if your friend goes to the other city and his/her family does not move.

Either he has to take a risk and then figure out the logistics of transferring. If he/she is 100% sure they are moving then it would be better to change Universities, that would again mean applying for admission to another University though.

Thanks for the advice. I sent him this respond.

Can he apply and secure two letter of acceptance from ryerson and other uni so when he arrives in august he can start at either of them considering where his family ultimately decides to live.

He’s not looking to transfer credit cause other uni might not accept all first semester credits done at the Ryerson or other uni, vice versa.

He is thinking securing Letter of acceptance from Ryerson and an another uni (nearby where his family might move)
So that after arriving he can choose either.

Is there any rules like when you arrive, you hve to only go to the university that you mention in your study permit application?
or you can arrive at canada and start at another school according to your liking.
( offcourse he will let the IRCC know that he started with a different school & update it in his gic )

You will have to pay atleast a deposit before coming here. I am not sure if it's practically possible to give deposit in two Universities since the deposit is usually 1 semesters fees. Also if you don't show up for classes you're seat is forefeit and you lose quite a bit of money in the refund.

Your study permit is tied to the University that you chose, while you can change it after arriving I am not personally very sure of the procedure, others may be able to comment.
