Hi,
I'm a Canadian/Australian dual citizen, though I've never actually lived in Canada. I currently live in Japan with my Japanese same sex partner of 5 years. We're in our late twenties. Neither Japan nor Australia performs same sex marriages at the moment so we're not married, but otherwise committed.
We are looking at perhaps moving to Canada next year, and I have some questions regarding what my partner's visa and working allowances would be. We're both in Health and have degrees and work experience in our fields. I assume that, as a citizen, I can live and work wherever and under whatever conditions I want, but for him I can't quite work out what his situation would be. It seems he could qualify through the Nursing PR pathway individually if necessary, and he'd have to pass the provincial board exam and the IELTS. He's done that before in English in Australia, so that shouldn't be a problem. However, if I sponsor him as a spouse, I keep reading about long wait times for an open work permit and lengthy periods where he can't work. What are our options? We'd probably look at moving to either Vancouver or Toronto. Montreal would be great, too, but not speaking French would probably make that overly difficult. We both speak English and Japanese.
Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
