Ask for a financial plan to pay the bill. Your parents can send you money and you can put some money yourself, so you can pay the debt.
I guess your mother's health was important so you hospitalize her, and I would assume you are grateful for Canada being flexible enough to give her attention even though she didn't had insurance.
The least you can do is pay.
