Romanian applying for visitor visa

I am living in Canada on a working visa and I'd like for my friend to come visit from the UK. He lives in the UK but is a Romanian citizen.

So I understand he has to submit a visitor visa application. One of the requirements of this seems to be an invite letter from those people he will be visiting i.e me.

How is one of these letters written? Does anyone have any experience of writing one? Does it matter that I'm not a Canadian citizen?
