Returning to Canada

I am a Canadian who married a US citizen and did the whole fiance visa/adjustment of status/citizenship journey which started for us when we applied for the fiance visa in 2001.
Now we are considering the move to Canada.
I have just starting looking around for links that are NOT commercial in nature, or all in legalize.
One factor in all of this is that my husband's mother was born in Ontario, and moved to the US with her family when she was a teenager. She got her citizenship in the 1940's, which means she would have likely had to renounce her citizenship.
My question is : can he apply for citizenship based on his mother having been born a citizen?

I think your best bet would be to call this # +1 613 944 4000 and give them your specifics and hopefully they can tell you- CIC themselves.

I do know that for the US, we were told that we had to physically walk into a courthouse and renounce to a judge for anything to be legal.

1. He probably is eligible for citizenship through descent. First generation born abroad. His mother probably didn't renounce, but that is immaterial. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/index.asp and he should apply for proof of citizenship.
