Return of passport from overseas visa office - delays!

Argh. Tripped up at one of the very last hurdles. My passport is in the Canadian customs office, so I just rang them to find out how I can get it back. The answer is, basically, tough - not only do customs inspect it, but so do RCMP and Immigration - despite it being SENT FROM A CANADIAN GOVERNMENT AGENCY. This "can take 3-4 weeks" and there is NOTHING I can do to get my passport, the most important document in my life, back. I want to be in Canada but being effectively held here is a different matter!

Huff. Where's the chocolate?

Thank you! There must be way too many fake passports out there, stuffing things up for the rest of us. Sometimes I just want to punch all the criminal low lifes who make so much red tape necessary.
