I am a Canadian citizen, born in Canada and now retired. I am sponsoring my wife Outbound and I am about to submit our Sponsorship Application - Family Class package TO Mississauga.
Once done, I will wait - AND HOPE- for a speedy approval of my sponsorship of my wife.

Once I am approved, I am thinking I would like to join my my wife in the Philippines and wait for her approval. My question is, would I still be considered as a resident of Canada? Does that pose any problems with respect to my residency.

I understand in other posts, a question by folks with PR status who are also sponsoring someone, that they should not leave Canada except for very brief periods ?

It would seem to me that as a Canadian citizen, I can live where I want ???

Help please.

Yes - you can go and live outside of Canada. If you leave Canada, there's a chance CIC might request proof that you plan to return to live in Canada after you wife's PR visa has been approved. But you're right, unlike a PR, you are free to go.

The other member is right you can live outside canada as long as you want. Just remember if you are planning to live in the Philippines during the processing of the application you are allowed to stay for a maximum of 29 days as a visitor. If I remember after that you need to pay tax about $150 or less each month.

Is there an official requirement for the OP to inform CIC that he has moved to Philippines temporarily?

What about when the OP keeps his Canadian home, pay Canadian tax and return to Canada once or twice each year? He would need to return to Canada at least once every year if he wants to keep his medical insurance.

I am certain that ALL provinces allow only a 6 month absence from a home province without lose on medical insurance.

I was advised by British Columbia medical insurance that BC is the only province that will allow A ONE TIME ABSENCE OF 2 YEARS from BC without losing medical coverage. After that, its 6 months absence each year max.

hope that helps
