Hi,
Im a PR holder, working outside Canada, but for a major blue chip Canadian company. I understand that time outside Canada spent with a Canadian spouse or a Canadian business can count towards the residency requirements.

The criteria looks to be vague, does anyone know how in practise this will be assessed? Like for example does my manager need to be based in Canada?

What are the residency requirements for permanent residents (PRs)?

If you are outside Canada for extended periods of time, you can accumulate residency days if you are:
  • Travelling with a Canadian spouse or common-law partner, or are a child under 19 years of age accompanying a parent, or
  • Employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or the Public Service of Canada and are assigned a position outside of Canada, or

The key words are were you working for this company in Canada and then assigned abroad by this company.

If you left Canada and then started working for this company outside of Canada without having worked for them in Canada then that would not usually count

So it needs to be a temporary assignment to a position outside of Canada from your Canadian company which at some point you would return to Canada to work for them.
