Hi all,
I'm an FSW Inland applicant with AOR March 2020, with all stages passed since January 2021 and currently awaiting the final decision/COPR.
My passport expires in January 2022 (along with my work permit) so I wanted to renew it before we get too close to January 2022. I've heard border agents don't like people traveling on a passport that's expiring within a few (6?) months. However, I have a few questions on this:
1. If I renew my passport now, I presume I will have to send a webform to IRCC with the updated passport information. However, the LAST thing I want to do is cause any further processing delays to get the COPR; we've already been waiting for over 16 months. Would updating my passport details cause further delays in receiving the COPR?
2. Alternatively, could I just go ahead and renew my passport without informing the IRCC right now? Or is my approval/COPR linked to my current passport number and would therefore cause problems if I did that?
3. Since it seems like Canada is considering reopening borders in the near future and FSW applicants may therefore see more luck soon, is it better to just hold off for a few more months on renewing the passport? Is it actually a big deal to travel on a passport that's near expiry?
4. I'm currently on an employer-specific work permit which was obtained through a dual-intent LMIA. The duration on my work permit was just over a year because of my passport expiry in January 2022. If there isn't any luck with the COPR in the next few months, do I apply for a BOWP or is it something else I need to apply for?
5. If I eventually need to apply for a work permit extension/BOWP due to a lack of COPR, I assume I would have to renew the passport first anyway. What cutoff date should I target for this, i.e. when should I give up on the hopes of getting COPR before my passport expires?
Thanks a mil in advance for your help here!
