Renewing my Permanent Residency status from outside of Canada?

I'm wondering if anyone can help with this. My PR card is due to expire in Sept 2017. I've fulfilled my obligations to make me eligible for a new PR card. However, I would like to return to my home country for a year or two in Sept of this year. I'm wondering does this mean that I'll lose my ability to apply for a new one if I'm in my home country when I make the request?
