i would like to sponsor a relative of mine who used to live in the united states as a legal permanent resident but who has a criminal record from the united states, what hurdles would he have to overcome other than criminal rehabilitation? would they be eligible for me to sponsor them? under what circumstances would they be eligible for them to come to canada for permanent resident status if i wanted to sponsor them? specifically it would be my sisters son. can someone please tell me what obstacles would have to be overcome so he could immigrate legally to canada. rsvp. thank you.

You most likely cannot sponsor your sister's son.

Do you have any children of your own? Are you married or common law? Are either of your parents still alive? Do you have any family members in Canada (including aunts and uncles)? If the answers to any of these questions is yes - you cannot sponsor your nephew.
