Hello all,

Background: Currently living in Quebec, applied for PR as a Quebec Skilled Worker (or possibly Quebec Experience Class, can't remember), application was moved to Sydney, Medical has been conducted.

I received a message requesting that my passport be sent to the US so that the process can be wrapped up and the visa placed in my passport. The only problem is there seems to be no way to guarantee quick shipping both to and from the Detroit office, and I am expecting to leave the country very soon.

At the time my application started, I was on a work visa that has since expired - my understanding was that I had implied status for the duration of the application.

I am wondering what would be required to re-enter Canada, should I leave, and if it is in fact possible to finalise my application at the port of entry, rather than send the passport off to Detroit.

Only Detroit can issue the visa - the port of entry cannot. So your passport has to reach the Detroit visa office for your application to be finalized.

I don't think you have much choice but to mail your passport to Detroit.

Hopefully someone else can be of more assistance.

What did you mean by this. I hope you are not out of status right now ! If so, this is gonna ruin the entire PR application process even if it is at the very last stage which is the passport request.

That would be rather unfortunate. Work visa is currently expired - sent everything off a long time before that happened though, and even applied to extend the work permit. I'm assuming that's the best I could have done?

Oh, Ok that will be fine. As long as you have sent already an application to extend your work permit before it expires, you will be fine and considered under an implied status until you receive a decision on your application regardless whether it is negative or positive.

Just make sure that you send your passport to the Detroit visa office for visa stamping as soon as possible, as you never know whether your work permit application is gonna get approved or refused and you don't wanna get into that hassle.

They will check on system your legal status in Canada at the last moment before they issue the PR visa, and if they see that you have an application pending for a work permit "or any temporary permit" extension, they will consider you under an implied status and you will be fine.

Good luck.
